Training Development Unit

Housed within the Training & Health Equity Collaborative, the Training Development Unit (TDU) is a Capacity Building Program for Medi-Cal healthcare workers under and funded through the California Advancing and Innovating Medi-Cal (CalAIM) Initiative.

Overview

The Training Development Unit, housed within the UCSF Department of Family and Medicine is funded through Anthem Blue Cross and Alameda Alliance for Heath. The TDU functions as a capacity-building facet of the CalAIM Initiative. We provide training opportunities (both virtual and in-person) to Enhanced Care Management (ECM) and Community Support (CS) providers within counties such as Los Angeles and Alameda and the Central Valley counties of California (Kern, Kings, Tulare, Madera, and Fresno).

Our goal is to increase CalAIM providers’ knowledge of services for eligible clients, hone their member engagement skills, support professional development for ECM/CS staff, and strengthen workforce retention. Our training menu highlights several themes, including:

  1. Focusing on a cross-sectoral approach
  2. Workforce recruitment, development, and retention
  3. Maintaining a coordinated system for skill development

Background

The Training & Health Equity Collaborative (THE Collaborative) has worked with the County of Alameda on its Whole Person Care pilot. Pacific AETC (one of the programs within THE Collaborative’s portfolio) led the Skills Development Unit for AC Care Connect. Community engagement skills, like Trauma Informed Care and Motivational Interviewing, emerged as common requests, further underscoring the need for ongoing, sustained training opportunities for CalAIM providers.

Training Offerings

“I enjoyed attending and learning from others- it was extremely helpful […] to hear from others experienced at working with clients through CalAIM and those who are at different stages of building out their capacity. Will definitely send our future case manager to this training!”
